In this month’s edition, we have a couple of questions that we get asked about treatments involving lasers! So if you’ve ever wondered about laser hair removal or skin resurfacing, read on...

I’ve got dark skin but I’d like to try laser hair removal. I’ve heard that you can only have it if your hair is lighter than your skin - is that true?

Yes and no, but mostly no! The older hair removal systems, like IPL, do only work on dark hair and pale skin, which made them unsuitable for a lot of people - not only people with dark skin but also those with pale skin and light hair. Now though, we have access to much better hair removal technology.

At Aesthetic MediSpa, we use the Soprano XL system - a laser hair removal system that is quite simply the best on the market. Not only is it suitable for all skin types, including Asian, Black and Mediterranean skin, it is also virtually pain-free (unlike its predecessors), so you can use it on more sensitive areas like the face, neck and bikini area.

I’ve tried chemical peels but they took ages to heal - I did like the way my skin felt afterwards though. Is there an alternative with a shorter recovery time?

The extended recovery time for dermabrasions and chemical peels can be off-putting for some people, even those who are keen to brighten the skin. Luckily there is now a new approach to improving skin complexion and tone, reducing acne scars and wrinkles, and resurfacing the skin - it’s called Pixel Laser Skin Rejuvenation.

The treatment combines the best of treatments that do remove the outer layers of skin (and have long recovery times) with treatments that don’t (and are more comfortable but less effective). It’s an FDA-approved treatment, so you know it’s safe, and the recovery time is significantly reduced compared to peels.
