How To Stop Excessive Sweating This Summer

author: last updated:

Excessive sweating can be an embarrassing and unsightly condition, and many sufferers want to not only reduce the amount they sweat, but also the signs they sweat. Today, our Rickmansworth skin clinic will look at how to get the condition under control in time for the warmer summer months, from treatment to at-home tips and tricks.

A short explainer

Before we begin, we’ll summarise what the condition is and why it can be a problem. Also known as hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating is where the body overproduces sweat, and not necessarily because of an increase in exercise or exertion. In fact, sometimes, the triggers for hyperhidrosis aren’t known - and the link could be genetic or hormonal.

Treatment

Hyperhidrosis can be effectively treated with botox injections. That’s because the main ingredient - botulinum toxin A - weakens nerve signals to the area, which in the case of sweat glands, can reduce how much sweat is produced. The treatment is quick and virtually painless (it involves injections of the solution), with lasting results - perhaps between 3 and 6 months, depending on the individual. Top-ups and repeat treatments are needed to maintain the effects.

Outlook

Those with hyperhidrosis may find the condition clears up on its own, but for others, it worsens - and as yet, there is no permanent cure. It can therefore be helpful to try and identify any triggers for your excessive sweating, including whether food and exercise play a part in how much you sweat.

Self-care

Another element of treatment surrounds things you can do for yourself, or do at home. These include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Limiting washing to once per day
  • Wearing loose, light clothing (for example linens)
  • Changing shoes when needed
  • Using antiperspirants, which block sweat production

    Weather

Being weather-aware can also help keep your excessive sweating under control. For example, take care to avoid the hottest time of day - usually noon - and keep to shade if possible. Wear appropriate clothing and footwear, and stay hydrated.
